Kamla Dutt is a scientist by profession and retired as Professor from the Department of Pathology at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Atlanta. Her research has been specifically in retinal cell biology. She has published scientific papers in leading eye journals, on investigative ophthalmology and vision research, DNA cell biology, tissue engineering, stem cell transplantation and therapeutics, and cancer research.
An avid theatre artist, Kamla starred in eleven major plays in India, where she won regional and state awards, including the All India Gaiety Theatre Award. She has also acted in four major productions of Hindi plays in Atlanta, and on two occasions played all five lead roles in Badal Sircar’s Pagla Ghoda.
Kamla is also a writer, with two collections of Hindi short stories to her credit: Machhli Salib Par Tangi (1979) and Kamla Dutt ki Yaadgar Kahanian (2014). Her stories have also appeared in several anthologies and she has been recognized as one of the 100 most influential women writers in Hindi. She began writing poetry in English after taking a workshop with the well-known poet and teacher Cecilia Woloch in 2006. In My Grandfather’s House is her first book of poems.
After retiring from MSM, Kamla has been dividing her time between Atlanta and New Delhi.
