Brigadier Nirmal Singh Gill was selected for the National Defence Academy (NDA) months after passing his matriculation exam from a remote village school in Punjab. During his service in the Indian Army, he acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from Punjab University, and later earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Madras. He took two years’ study leave to complete a management systems degree from Canada. Now retired, he spends time playing golf and reading.
